Maroni likes to choose a variety of indigenous and international varieties to showcase to the American public and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Consumers responded with enthusiasm again this year and the event drew in 900 people, 300 from the wine trade and the press.
Every category of wine was represented from sparkling wines to still wines to dessert wines. The evening was also made all the more enjoyable by the food offered by Buonitalia Spa. SensofWine New York was made possible thanks to a project with Veronafiere-Vinitaly under the patronage of Italian Minister for agriculture food and forestry policies and through the support of Buonitalia Spa.
Consumers were able to mingle with producers and chat about their wines in the beautiful Cipriani hall. They were also offered a host of delicacies including a full buffet of Cipriani’s delicious foods as well as a table replete with all authentic Italian cheeses and another table dedicated exclusively to Italian desserts organized by Dolceitalia paired with Asti DOCG.
Many different Italian regions were represented including Apulia, Le Marche, Sicilia and Calabria. Maroni chooses his wines very carefully and has lately been concentrating on wines that show a purity of fruit or are fruit forward. Consumers and the trade had the opportunity to try very particular wines which are hard to get in the United States such as Visciola, a dessert wine from Le Marche fortified with rectified cherry syrup.
Maroni gave out his second annual SensofWine awards to Domaine Select, an importer and Fred Plotkin, a journalist and author for their outstanding contributions to the promotion of Italian wines in the United States.

Maroni has created a specific tasting method based on the senses. A native of Rome, Maroni began working with the renowned wine expert Luigi Veronelli, and writing for “ L ’ Etichetta ” magazine right after graduating from university. Maroni has been writing and studying wine for over 20 years and has tasted more than 150,000 wines during his career.
SensofWine New York was the only event open also to consumers during Italian Wine Week, Vino 2010 that took place from February 3 to February 5.
For those who couldn’t attend this year, don’t despair. Maroni will be back next year.
